Gratification Review

Gratificacion or Gratification is a 2020 short film written and directed by Andres Hernandez Covarrubias.

Gratification is about a life of distraction, one that has moments of sincere joy, but they are fleeting. It is a style of living that many of us are all too familiar with, however it is in those genuine connections that we can truly find life’s greatest gratifications.

The story revolves around Alfonso, who is what you could deem a workaholic, someone always absorbed in his work. From the beginning he is late to picking up his son from school, dropping him off to his mother’s house. The only connecting piece between Alfonso and his son is an affinity for stamp collecting. Alfonso is always trying to do his best but seems to unavoidably always be late to his familial duties, missing his son’s birthday party as he was attempting to procure a last-minute gift.

Rather than being given a sad conclusion, Alfonso and his son share a last moment studying the stamp collection, reconnecting after the disappointment of the missed party. It is a charming conclusion and one that will hopefully bring change to Alfonso in his life moving forward.

In this short film there is a well-utilized amount of camera movement that adds to the production value of the piece. The cinematography by Edgar Saenz Kuri was beautiful in the ability to provide clean, natural light in both high key and low contrast situations. The score by Eduard Canseco was touching, elevating the visuals on screen throughout. Lastly, the acting was great from the entire cast, providing a great nuance to each character portrayed.

Serial

This is a film made with a lot of confidence, and clear direction from Covarrubias. The team that has assembled here has a great sense of pacing and visual fidelity. This is a touching short film with a lot of heart throughout.
