Glim Review

Glim is a 2020 horror short film directed by Adrian Simeone.

The definition of the word glim is a lantern or candle and is something that is featured heavily in this short film. In fact, in the piece, I can’t help but think there are many larger elements that the team over at Late Night .99 has at play here that aren’t fully revealed. It is both intriguing and frustrating all at once, but I always enjoy ambiguity, especially in my horror stories.

This short takes a heavy dose of inspiration most notably from The Purge, having a story revolving around a single night where bad things can happen with no consequence will of course draw those immediate parallels. However, Simeone adds a nice touch of the paranormal to the proceedings which helps carve out a unique identity for Glim.

The acting from Ben Clerc and Kasey Runge is serviceable here if not a little stiff at times. That same sentiment can be said for the cinematography as well which gets the job done. The images are clean though, no major noise or anything which can be an easy pitfall for lowlight shooting. The sound design is well done, and out of all the technical elements to look into shines the most overall from my viewing experience.

This is the second film I have been able to sit down with from Late Night .99 and where I think their greatest strength lies is in world building. In both Glim and Vigil, they are quick to establish a world that is not unlike this one but with some unique twists on it. I think they have a strong knack for this and the characters they have inhabiting these places are interesting too. I really can’t wait to see what they can accomplish in something like a feature or with a larger budget. Speaking on Late Night .99 as a whole too, I am enjoying the fact that they are experimenting in different genres as well, this is always appreciated.

Overall, I think Glim is a good short horror film. If you are a fan of the aforementioned The Purge then you will definitely get some enjoyment out of this short. I think for a debut short film this demonstrates a team with a lot of passion and a lot strengths as storytellers. Adrian Simeone and team have a strong voice and while this may not be perfect it is still worth taking a look at.
