Seconds Review
Seconds is a 2019 short film Directed by Ryan Margetts.
Wow what an amazing achievement to accomplish in a matter of 3 minutes. Seconds is an amazing short film that reminds us just how precious every moment of life is. Through a simple token of someone trying to make up for past mistakes, in this case a father trying to make amends with his son we show how a whole life can change.
Michael has his world turned upside when he learns of the death of his estranged father but through what we can surmise is a feeling of regret for never making amends he goes on to lead a great life, taking strides to instill love in his own son. We see all of this without so much as a single word of dialogue that is spoken after Michael receives his fateful phone call.
If you ever needed a reason to argue why film can be such a powerful medium this short would be a strong case for it. It is such a touching story that is so expertly self-contained it is not hard to see why it has received a lot of praise already.
On a technical level what I love the most in this short film is the bit that is featured predominately and that is the amazing visual transitions creating all focused, natural edit points. Edgar Wright eat your heart out because this style of cutting vast ellipses of time is handled about as smoothly as one could hope for. The fact that this is Margetts’ first ever short film is a bar set sky high but a testament to his skill as a director.
There is a comment on the YouTube video for this film someone left mentioning that this should be bought by Timex as an official advertisement and while I agree in one hand, I can’t help but say that it is honestly above that as well. This is something way beyond just a commercialized product but watch yourself Ryan, you might see some eerily similar concepts for watch commercials to come over the next few years.
My final thought would be watch this film. If you need a reminder on why life is precious or how you can seize the day this is it. Looking at it through the lens of 2021, after the year that has been the harsh reality of life for everyone this short film only stands taller than ever before. It is an amazing short film and positive beacon on how we can all rise to be better in life despite all the hardships we may face.
