Before the Rain Review

Before the Rain is a 2021 short film directed by Katelyn Sordo and Emma Lindsay with writing by Katelyn Sordo. It is the first film by this emerging team!

Before the Rain is an important story that comes to us from a genuinely female perspective. It is something that we need to see more of in the industry, as diverse representation is critical now more than ever before. Keeping all of this in mind the piece that ultimately holds this film back is its many technical shortcomings.

Nothing will ever be perfect in any film we create and there are reasons as to why certain decisions have to made when we face those hurdles. Personally, I’ve been there many a time so I can completely understand why things can end up the way they do in any project. However, it pains me to say there are issues that I noticed throughout the piece that were just hard to ignore.

From some dirt on the lens, to some jarring edits, a strange sound mix, and cinematography in shots seeming to change between cuts. It takes a lot away from this short film as a whole.

Moving away from the negative side of things I want to again focus on where this film shines and that is in the plot as well as the characters. All of the leads featured have a great chemistry together and it is obvious that the making of the film was a lot of fun for everyone involved. Again, the voice it is trying to lend to those who have dealt with the trauma of sexual assault is amazingly commendable here.

Serial

At the end of the day, I still think this is a film worth sitting down to. I think it is a deeply cathartic tale for anyone who has suffered any trauma in life. It is a universal story for victims and ending on ways to seek help is extremely noble. My thoughts are that the team behind Before the Rain are all just getting started into what will be fruitful careers creating amazing films to come. I never want my reviews to be discouraging to any creatives, that is certainly not what I am trying to do here. I only try to point out things I notice to push to create greater works as time moves on.

I’m excited to see what Katelyn Sordo and her entire team push on to next and again a major kudos for tackling such a deep topic that doesn’t get the correct attention in media.
