Aye Mitraaa Review

Aye Mitraaa is a 2021 short film written and directed by Bimal Bose.

Aye Mitraaa is a well-produced short film that has some solid direction and some great camera movement, the story though while interesting really only scratches the surface of how women can be simple objects for the desire for men.

There is a clear, powerful vision on display here from Bimal Bose, who finds great footing, especially in some interesting camera moves used throughout. There is a nice showcase of how everyone comes together as a group too.

Where the film falls out though is in the last act. This is not a bad way to end the film, but it feels as though it doesn’t go down as dark a road as it could. This is of course a completely subjective choice, but given the tagline “Showcasing every women’s worst nightmare,” it seemed as if the film would go to some much grimmer places.

The acting here is good across the board. All the actors have a clear chemistry and each gives a solid performance. With this being at a quick 10 minutes we spend little time outside of our main protagonist couple, but the places where we have our larger friend group, the interactions all seem natural.

The varied locations and strong colors that saturate the screen (almost too saturated) create a nice aesthetic. Again, this winds down in the last act where we are in what seems to be a hotel where everything is too bland.

With the story having this twist of a friend who is not everything he seems; this telegraphed character change takes up a bit too much focus at the midpoint of the film. It makes for a final revelation that the audience will see coming long before it happens.

Serial

In the end, Bimal Bose and his team have some strong filmmaking prowess. There is nothing inherently wrong with the story told here, but nothing that will be of a complete shock either. It is nice to see an issue being brought to the forefront, though that is rarely in focus in Indian media.
