The Remembering Review

The Remembering is a 2016 short film directed by Axel Arzola, written by Megan Ownbey.

If you had the option to leave a final message right before you died, what would you say? This is the question at the core of The Remembering, a heartfelt look at passing on from this world.

This short film certainly kicks off with an introduction that will grab your attention. We see lead character Erin in a void of white space that leaves her at first confused. It is a moment that is hurried on to as she interacts with a version of herself. In this it gives her a chance to look back on a few memories before deciding who to leave a last message with.

This sudden change from confusion to an understanding comes through a bit too quickly here, with this being the biggest note that one could leverage at the short.

Lead actress Erin Ownbey does a superb job leading the film. She brings an earnestness to not just her newly spiritual self but also her doppelganger who explains everything throughout. This is a short that hinges on a good lead performance which Ownbey safely navigates.

On the visuals we have cinematography from Chris Nelson and Arzola himself. Where the film is at its strongest has to be in the pure white space, it is a vast void that carries just enough definition to it all. Some may see the JJ Abrams style flares as a bit overused in modern films, however it still gives a pleasant break up to the white space. Outside of that, there is a lot of effective dolly movement that is implemented in the piece.

Serial

This is a sweet and hopeful short film that delivers a contemplative message. Providing an ending that is both expected and unexpected, but beautiful all the same.
