Tin Box Review
Tin Box is a 2020 short film written and directed by Andy Compton.
Delivering a Hitchcock inspired narrative that takes a smart Shyamalan twist by the conclusion, Tin Box makes for a clever and riveting short film.
Dealing with the grips of addiction is something far too common in the world today, and the media portrayal of it can be a bit of a mixed bag. It is amazing to see then a film such as this which obviously shows a level of respect with the internal struggle of such a terrible turn of events in anyone’s life.
We follow an addict as he is getting high in a bathroom. He is a man desperate to get a fix and breaks into a home to find money and food. What he discovers is that in this home there is a man held captive. What unfolds is a gripping story that leaves you guessing through to the end.
What is quite a triumphant moment for this film has to be the ending. Of course, to see it you will have to watch it for yourself, but it hits at the all-too-common root of addiction in a thoughtful and thought-provoking way.
This is not the only powerful aspect of the piece. Larry Claudin and Cliff Mirabella give outstanding performances across the entire short. Mirabella especially brings a menacing physicality in his brief scenes in the film.
Bennett Kedge delivers great cinematography in the short with a naturalistic and gritty tone throughout. There was only one scene toward the very end where the color correction in some shots seemed to change a bit, but even that wasn’t a major issue by any means.
Overall, this is a great short film with a smart, cunning story that surely Hitchcock would applaud for. This is one that is guaranteed to leave you in sheer suspense and also reflecting on for at least a little while after the end credits roll.
