Pew! Pew! Pew! Review

Pew! Pew! Pew! is a 2020 short film directed by Loren Dunn with writing from Matthew DeCapua and Loren Dunn.

A loving tribute to those who cosplay the world around Pew! Pew! Pew! comes from a place of pure fandom that wears its own silliness on a heartfelt sleeve.

For anyone that has a passing fondness for fandom, particularly of the science fiction variety, this is the film for you. Striking a perfect chord between both Star Wars and Star Trek franchises, this short delivers plenty of loving homages to each.

One continuing theme for this film is heart, and that reflects especially in the story. While admittedly a little silly at times, it is completely aware of this and plays into it perfectly. At the core of the film is lending forgiveness to an old estranged friend. It is a sweet and poignant way to end things off, and we leave on a grand high note to finish the film.

There are a few times, especially in the beginning, where trying to balance editing styles from each separate sci fi franchise is a little choppy but almost everything else on display works to great effect here. Don’t worry either, there is plenty of pewing to go around in this piece as well.

The core friend group at the head of the cast is a diverse group which celebrates the amazing inclusiveness that science fiction and cosplay always have, which is great to see translated to the short.

Serial

This is a film you will have fun with and one that is a pure fandom celebration. Having a personal connection to the likes of Star Trek: The Next Generation growing up, it was endearing to see such a deep fanbase celebrating such classic franchises in a unique and charming way. Pew! Pew! Pew! is great fun and one that will leave you with a smile on your face.
