Mine Review

Mine is a 2018 short film written and directed by Jesus Diez Perez.

A darkly romantic short horror film, Mine delivers on a self-contained narrative, but leaves just a touch too much up to the imagination.

While the story that we are treated to here is delightfully sinister, with strong production value everything needs a touch more context to make the ending that much stronger. What really opened up this explanation was the description of the short in the video link more than any small clues in the film.

Knowing that this young woman was once possessed lets all the pieces come together, and it was this point that really should have been addressed a bit more strongly in the film. Nothing major was really needed, just a visual cue or a touch of dialogue that helps clue us in.

Outside of that though the rest of the film makes a powerful impression. The visuals and camerawork as nicely implemented, with some great cinematography from Paul Irving, who gives just the right amount of shadow and light. The art direction who Irving handled as well is nicely detailed here too.

Another significant piece to mention is the demon makeup work from Sarshya Wilkinson who created something that is striking, while not over the top. It feels just in line with what was needed for the character.

Last, the score all around from William Kenlon and Perez set the tone perfectly. With the great implementation of diegetic and non-diegetic music coalescing so well.

This is all great film work from a team that clearly has an affinity for horror, it is a treat to see such care being put into film.

Serial

Overall, Mine really only suffers a bit from the story side of things but shines well in virtually every other element. It is a short that commands your attention and does not waste your time in what it wants to say.
