Other Half Review
Other Half is a 2021 short animated film directed by Lina Kalcheva and written by Laura Jayne Tunbridge.
A wonderful deconstruction of the modern landscape of dating dressed in a Grecco style epic, Other Half delivers astounding visuals with poignant commentary.
The first thing that will strike you as you sit down to this short film is the wonderful and unique art style implemented in the short. The bright crayon style aesthetic brings about a pastel palette that is a treat just to look at.
Beyond that, of course, lies within a wonderful storyline that so expertly encapsulates the experiences many of us go through in trying to find our perfect match. Existing in a world where media consistently portrays the perfect unions, we all have those times of biting loneliness. So by our own nature, we journey out to try to find our person.
Without spoiling the entirety of the piece, it can be said though that the messaging by the end is beautiful and for those who may be overwhelmed by their own dating trials and tribulations can definitely gain a lot from watching this one through.
The score and sound design, which are always key for any animated piece, are wonderful here too. Creating something that can be a little unnerving at parts and upbeat when needed. In that same sentiment, the score can be echoed with the same effectiveness.
All in all, Other Half is an easy short film to recommend, not only for its amazing visuals but also for the great messaging it has throughout. You can truly walk away from this film feeling like a stronger person and, for that, it deserves a heaping of praise. Give it a watch when you can!
