A Godless Country Review
A Godless Country is a 2021 short film written and directed by Jesse Richardson.
Delivering a beautifully macabre look at the earliest days of the Australian settlement, A Godless Country delivers a story of hope against all odds.
The exceptional visual quality of this film is the first thing that must be stated. From wonderful shot compositions to large vistas showcasing the nature of Australia, what we have throughout is truly a feast for the eyes.
The heavy use of some amazing aerial camerawork is something that can at times feel a bit cliché by this point, but even this film navigates to a happy medium, delivering shots that actually make it more of a necessary element than a forced one.
The costuming and set designs are also excellent. There is no point where it feels like the immersion of the time period is broken. Add to that the proper makeup effects to deliver a time where hygiene wasn’t as easily maintained either, and it checks all the boxes of making you feel that you are really there.
Taking things a step further, the acting is exceptional here too. The characters portray their parts accurately, again making for no places where it felt like they were struggling to grasp the material or with any kind of line delivery. Each actor played their parts perfectly and the entire piece was well balanced.
To cap things off what we are left with is an easy to recommend film. A Godless Country creates a stirring and moving film with big budget sensibilities in a small scale narrative. The acting, visuals and storytelling all land exactly where they need to go and everything about the piece comes together pitch perfectly. When you can go give this a watch.
This film was screened as part of the AFIN International Film Festival.
