Skateblood Film Spotlight

Today’s film spotlight focuses on the short film Skateblood directed by Maxime Laurin.

What is the title of your film and what inspired said title?

The title is SKATEBLOOD. We wanted to do a play on words mixing
the skateboard environment and the horror that unfolds.

Tell us a little bit about the story and origins of your film.

We came up with it whilst walking our dog (also featured in the film). We were discussing that we missed the old punk and skateboard vibe that we used to have a lot in the early OO’s. It also became an excuse for us to film a fight scene, as we are also stunt performers in the film industry.

Any films or filmmakers that inspired this film?

Of course, Scott Pilgrim and Kickass for the style. But also Godefroy Ryckewaert, who is an award winner indie filmmaker in France that inspired me to start making my own shorts. Watching his and many other videos made me realize that with just a little ambition and effort you can bring to life any film that you have in mind.

What is the goal of the film for you?

The goal of the film is to shock and laugh at the same time! We want the
audience to not be sure of what they are feeling when they watch it.
SKATEBLOOD is made to be a short, fun and intense experience.

What has the journey been like getting the film into production?

It was a lot of back and forth on hundreds of ways to kill people with a
skateboard! Also of course, there was a struggle of making sure we could achieve the whole shoot in one day since we couldn’t have everybody for 2 consecutive days. Also the skatepark was a public area so we studied the days and time of the week where there were less people using it. We were so lucky that the people in the park were so cooperative with us on the day.

One thing you learned from this project?

I personally learned on that day that it is very hard to be in front and behind the camera at the same time. So I decided to stay on only one side for the following projects and if I decide to perform, I will get a director.
