Catch This Dream on Film Review
Catch this Dream on Film is a 2020 experimental short film that comes to us from KoiKoi Photography, a photo duo based in Dallas headed up by Laura Davis and Jonathan Garcia.
Hearing the term “experimental,” when it comes to film, I am sure will conjure up mixed feelings from those uninitiated in how vast an array of filmmaking styles this can encompass. However, this is not a film designed to purposefully draw out a single shot or stare out at one building for hours on end. Not that there is anything wrong with either of these things but what I enjoy about Catch this Dream on Film is that it truly does encapsulate a certain style of dreaming.
As we begin, we are given a quick explanation on what it means to lucid dream and while personally I have only experienced this a few times myself it is a strange experience, being aware of something being a dream.
I feel as though so far in my look back on the piece I have taken a much too personal approach to this short and I think this is actually of a great benefit to the piece itself. Isn’t the point of most film work to make us think back on our experiences and own lives. This short really captures that while also maintaining a strange nostalgia to it all. There is nothing explicitly shown that I can immediately personally relate to but yet it feels super personal at the same time.
The visual experimentation and musical notes are great throughout with the standout sequence for me being the skateboarder on the bridge. An awesome effect complimented by some unique soundscapes. I am not a fan of ASMR but if you have even the slightest enjoyment from those style of videos, you’ll have plenty to love here.
Overall, this is one to sit down with especially before bed and I’ll be happy to check out more work from Davis and Garcia. Coming from a world of more corporate/event style videography myself I can always applauded folks who are looking to spread their creative wings. So, keep flying high fam!
