Beneath Us All

Beneath Us All Film Spotlight

Today’s film spotlight focuses on the feature film Beneath Us All directed by Harley Wallen.

What is the title of your film and what inspired said title?

The Title is ‘Beneath Us All’ and it’s implied of something dead and buried that comes back..

Tell us a little bit about the story and origins of your film.

My friend and writer Bret Miller and I talk pretty regularly about stories and a Viking origin Vampire collided with an abusive foster family situation..  it was such an amazing way at the story and so many layers because of the setting and choices.. I always love looking at human emotion, character and the actions that follow.

Any films or filmmakers that inspired this film?

Yes we had several inspirations such as ‘Let the Right One In’ with its current and unique setting for the tale.  We also wanted to wonder when it comes to who is good, who is bad or evil and challenge those thoughts as they’ll change throughout the film a touch dreamy too in ways Brahms Stokers Dracula and even back to Nosferatu..  It felt familiar and fresh at the same time, that felt like a good sign.

What is the goal of the film for you?

I love the entire journey of filmmaking from the dreaming and creative open mind finding a story that pulls me in then through the planning and doing states to the extreme collaboration where 100 hands make one film to slicing and dicing and finding the right song for it and then ultimately sharing it with the world..  so i guess I hope to share it with the world!

What has the journey been like getting the film into production?

It was a rough one as covered in Deadline Hollywood as we were originally supposed to make it in April 2020 but obviously covid had other plans and we were derailed for 15 months.

One thing you learned from this project?

That having more time is one of the most valuable things for a fantastic final product!  We had a few extra days on this one and I feel it made its mark on the film in so many ways!

How can folks find you and your film online?

They can’t just yet, we are in talks with distributors as we speak and they are excited but we really want either a strong licensing deal or a limited theatrical for North America, we feel it’s a great BIG SCREEN film.

Any last pieces of advice for fellow filmmakers?

Always remember why you’re doing it!  Sometimes it’s not fun, schedules, budgets and curveballs of all kinds happen but instead of getting lost in those inevitable places, I find that reminding myself of how badly I wanted to do this and that if I said I’d be here today doing what I do, I’d probably laugh at it so I am super grateful to be doing this and having a pretty decent amount of people enjoying it and that makes it all worth it..  I help my cast be placed in a good light, I enable my crew to create things they can be proud of and make and our circle stronger and bigger.. Make it a community, so they care an we all get a little closer to our dreams and aspirations with each project!
