#ToDream Review
#ToDream is a 2019 semi-experimental drama short film by Dean Evans.
While at only one-minute long #ToDream encapsulates so many different things despite the super short run time. Managing to invoke feelings of anxiety, dread, hope, and nostalgia. Sitting down with it, it feels like a filmmaker’s film while also maintaining an accessibility to anyone who has ever felt anxious in a public place.
Our leading protagonist as portrayed by Charlotte Etherington brings her own personal charm to the character but also leaves it open enough that it lets us as an audience into her world. It is a place where we want to be ourselves but yet feel limited to do so. We want to create and hope for some deep recognition, daydreaming about our films being accepted to a festival but preparing ourselves for rejection. In keeping itself so short it allows our minds to wander past just this one-minute run time to what the future holds for not only this woman but also ourselves.
The music choice here also fits the short so wonderfully and only elevates that modern nostalgia that is embedded so deeply in our culture now. The want for things to be analogue but the craving for them to be brand new. The push and pull we all experience with embracing a faster changing world but wanting to hold onto the memories of our youth.
Am I just crazy for gathering so much from just this little film? Maybe, but for me every little frame, instant, moment from this short connected to a beautiful piece. Like a song you heard on the radio but only at the end, you know it was amazing but you have to find it to hear more. Maybe though if it was longer it wouldn’t have resonated so much with me but in any case, I loved the entirety of that minute I was invited to sit in that space.
I am completely excited to sit down with more work from Evans and I hope he continues to create such moving pieces of art. I give a big round of applause here and I am glad that I had the chance to watch this short film.
