Canon C70 Review
Does it deliver?
The Canon C70 is the new hybrid cinema mirrorless camera from Canon. It is the latest camera to blur the lines between a DLSR and full fledged cinema beast. Essentially what happens when you combine the Canon 1DX Mark III and C300 Mark III with some tweaks of course. We here at To Tony Productions have had the fortune to play around with the C70! Take a look at our brief Canon C70 review below.
So let’s begin by looking at the specs for this small but powerfual camera:
- Sensor size: 26.2 x 13.8 mm (Super 35)
- ISO: 100 to 102,400
- Dynamic Range: 16 stops
- Lens mount: Canon RF
- Media: Dual Slot SD/SDHC/SDXC
- Frame Rates: DCI 4k: Up to 120 fps, 2k – Up to 180 fps
- 1x HDMI Output
- 2x Mini XLR Mic/Line Level Input
- No EVF
So those are just a few of the specs for the camera. Now that it has been out in the wild for a while one of the biggest complaints that has come out of the camera is the focus hunting. On many forums it has been discussed and it still seems to be very divisive. Many folks have mentioned it and already abandoning the camera, while others have said they have no trouble at all. In our experiences we have not dealt with any major issues but if we do of course we will update those findings.
So at the end of the day what do we have from the C70? Well we have a great, capable, small cinema camera with an amazing sensor and a great lineup of RF lenses to choose from. It is amazing for gimbal work and you can even tilt it on its side for social media specific recording, with a handy tripod mount.
Do we think it could be a main camera? To us it still feels like a great secondary camera or supplement to something like a C300 Mark III or even a C200 but if you are in a field of filming where you need to be on the go, or in a fast-paced environment than you can do no wrong with the small but might C70.
