Trapped Review

Trapped is a 2020 Indian short film Written and Directed by Vaishnavi Macdonald.

The film Trapped is a short film that tells a brutally heartfelt story in the most inconspicuous way. I can guarantee you that you will not predict how this one ends even if you feel like you have a grasp on it. For that I think it deserves a big amount of praise.

In my research on the film, I saw that it was filmed on a Samsung mobile phone which I don’t think is something that is a negative but I do wish the visual fidelity was just a bit better throughout the piece. The way in which some of the subtitles were placed on the screen were a little awkward at times as well. Lastly the music can sometimes enter and exit scenes rather quickly, creating some jarring transitions.

I bring up these technical aspects not as a reason to avoid watching the film but rather as just some things I noticed while watching that I hope might help inform Macdonald on future projects as I think she has a great gift for storytelling. It is always great seeing films made throughout the world but especially female directors, it is always refreshing to see!

Getting back to the story this is a film that weaves a tale of acceptance on many layers and letting go of our burdens. It is something that we can all relate to with different instances in our lives and using this against the backdrop of the lockdown we all had to deal with only heightens the beauty of the story.

Serial

Overall, I highly encourage you to take some time to sit down with Trapped, especially if you are a mother with a teenage daughter. This is not a topic that gets talked about much in media or in film and it is a beautiful thing that Macdonald chose such a jumping off point for her film. I am excited to see more of what she can bring to her future work.
