Killer Brownie Review

Killer Brownie is a short, found footage horror film Directed by Ignacio L. Vacas.

Found footage is one of those styles that is hard to really add some new flavor (no pun intended) into these days. However, opening with the simple concept of someone posting a quick cooking tutorial online from their phone starts Killer Brownie off in a good place. It is also an easy way to keep us in the realm of why the footage is all being shown to us from a phone in the first place.

I will say I think the timing for this short film is also perfect too. With the way 2020 went down the idea of somehow creating an evil brownie would not surprise me. If I woke up to a news article discussing the topic, I probably wouldn’t even bat an eye at this point. As an aside on the topic of 2020, I enjoyed the nice toilet paper joke at the beginning too, although it will also be funny years from now when people look back and have no clue the humor of that one.

I think Vacas has a good eye for tension too. The dramatic conclusion to the film builds up nicely. While I do think having something to punch up the reveal moment at the finale like a stronger audio mix may have helped, it still did not take anything away from it either. I also enjoyed some nice use of stop motion as well, always good seeing this technique being implemented.

Serial

At a brisk 3-minute run time I would say to check this fun short film out. It may not leave you terrified of brownies but it will at least make you think twice about what you may be putting into your next mix when you do. I thought Ignacio L. Vacas made a fun, clever horror short film here despite all the complications for filmmaking 2020 created, and I can’t wait to check out more of his work. Give this one a look when it is available online.
