Toast Review

Toast is a 2021 short film directed by Oliver Rogers.

Do not watch this before breakfast because there will be only one thing you will want to treat yourself to afterwards. Toast is an enjoyable film that chronicles one mans endless quest to get himself a nice bit of a toast that just keeps going wrong. While I feel the concept overstays its welcome just a bit there is still fun to be had with this short.

Watching the piece I feel like it could have been trimmed down just a little bit in length as the pacing slows to a bit of a crawl right at when our protagonist as portrayed by Paul Cooper tries to conjure up some toast in his fire pit. I also feel like a bigger showcase of his toaster being defective could have pulled me in quicker to the plight, as it didn’t all seem to click together until after looking back on the film again. I thought originally, he just made the mistake of leaving the toast in too long.

What I really enjoyed about the short film was first and foremost the song featured throughout performed by Professor Elemental. It was perfectly hilarious and a good earworm of a song for sure. Harkening back to our lead Paul Cooper, I thought he did a great job at emoting in all the right ways without uttering a single phrase through most of the film. There were also some stand out story moments to highlight here as well, the men appearing as if they had toast on their face was great.

Serial

What you have here at the end of the day is a fun what I would classify dark comedy short film that has a great premise to it. It elongates that concept just a bit much but not to any egregious offense by any means. It was clear that a lot of love went into the production, and it is good for some solid laughs. Give it a go!
