Qardoun: La Passation Review

Qardoun: La Passation is a 2021 experimental short film written, directed, and produced by Sarah El Hamed.

What does it mean to live a life dictated by others? This along with many other questions regarding the role of women in society are part of the myriad of beautiful imagery scattered throughout Qardoun: La Passation. A film that truly shows how harsh the feminine plight is even to this day.

Through an expressive use of dance and frenetic movements we are shown each of the basic elements of the world. Earth, fire, water, air, and ether are all embodied by women of different sizes and shapes. These women all exist in different spaces with coded imagery that is deeply layered despite none of the characters ever truly speaking out. The only leading voice we get is narration from a force unseen.

It is at once a criticism of the disrespected power that women have in the world, while at another a beacon of hope for what can be achieved with unity. The symbol of the circle is highlighted throughout, after all without women to carry on the next generation how could life even continue to exist? Yet we take the time to make sure the rights they maintain are at lower levels than most patriarchal governments want to imbue.

I have a high respect for the strong voice that Sarah El Hamed is carrying throughout this film. I think this is a unique and beautiful short that has rich layers of abundant symbolism.

Looking through the technical aspects of the piece, the cinematography by Ahmed Zitouni was high key but clean, with times of stark contrast making for some eye-catching flare. The narration was beautifully written, the choreography between all the elements was hypnotic and chaotic. Even the makeup and costuming was well handled, capturing the elemental nature of each character gorgeously.

I really enjoyed this short film, and I am excited to see what worlds that Sarah El Hamed can continue to build. I appreciate the tone of this piece and the strong voice that it carries. Not just for the beautiful feminist prospective but for the way it can open so many eyes to having a deeper respect for all that women do in life and in the world.
