Into the Grove Review

Into the Grove is a 2020 sci-fi short film directed by Alex Clegg.

At less than 2 minutes Into the Grove is a quick affair that is almost too short. It provides a very teeny slice of what feels like could be an interesting world, with some more time to occupy it.

For those following this makes for my third film from the team Late Night .99 and again another genre that these guys are taking a foray into. While I think the self-given description of science fiction is a little debatable, since nothing directly screams that genre, it is another cool world that feels like it has a lot more going on to it.

With each of the short films that this team has made I can surmise a deep desire to want to expand past the confines of the limited indie constraints they have. It will be neat to see what they can create and make as they find themselves in bigger budget filmmaking situations. I see the for now DIY filmmaking approach taking on much more vibrant life as they grow and hone their skills.

This team has a good knack for musical selections, locations, and even costuming overall. They also do a good job with their sound designs too. One consistent thread I’ve noticed in all the films is the use of an audio device. In Vigil it was a podcast, for Glim we had a radio station, and now in Into the Grove we have direct walkie talkie communication. While nothing important, it was just cool to note.

Serial

All in all, I think Clegg and the whole team continue to experiment with new genres in some fun, inventive ways. I have enjoyed all their short films that they have shared with me, and I look forward to sitting down to more.
