Sushi Night Review

Sushi Night is a 2020 short horror film written and directed by Jack Kierski.

Never has sushi seemed so unappealing and yet appetizing all in the span of 9 minutes. One part Misery, one part Audition, Sushi Night delivers on an interesting concept shown off in a bloody good time.

Have you ever had one of those dates? You know, the bad dates. Well, how about if your new love interest suddenly wanted to murder you based solely off a poor choice of words. Let me present to you exhibit A on the long list of terrible first dates.

What starts off as an innocent night of homemade sushi quickly devolves into something much more sinister in a fun, if not a little predictable short film from Jack Kierski.

If there was one piece that I could mention that anyone who checks out these reviews will know about it is the sound. There aren’t any bad offenses in the sound mix here but just a few moments of some overmodulation, especially with some of the painful screams from lead character Stan as portrayed by Gonzalo Garcia-Castro.

On the note of the acting, everything here works well. It is a slightly awkward first date and once the action starts flowing Garcia-Castro along with co-star Marise Jimenez both give spirited performances.

Further looking into the technical aspects, starting off on the gore content, I can say that while not over the top, as I think some horror aficionados like it to be, I found it serviceable and cringe inducing all the same, these effects being provided by Yesenia Garcia. The cinematography by Martin Villa certainly does a good job at emulating the in-home lighting style. The music too, while not all over the piece, when it was used worked well. I especially like the outro synth style score, gave me some nice John Carpenter style vibes.

Serial

Overall, I enjoyed my time with Sushi Night and can see that it comes from a team that enjoys their horror films. The tone is a nice mix of humor and horror, never taking itself too seriously and I think the length was just right. I am excited to check out more work from Kierski and team as they continue to create. Oh yeah, just make sure the next time a friend offers you sushi, eat all of it, they might get offended.
