Limbo Review

Limbo is a 2017 short film directed by Jean-Luc Julien and written by Amy Fruchtman.

Grief can oftentimes be the catalyst for the destruction of those working through it. It is something we all inevitably must face, and how we deal with grief can reshape our own day to day existence. Limbo is a look at how a grieving father can be consumed by the loss of his own daughter.

Smartly written and beautifully acted, this is the kind of film that sticks with you long after the run time. Wilfried Hochholdinger, who plays the lead Danny, brings an amazing range to his character, and his ability to realistically showcase a man torn apart by a loss is beautiful. The sheer number of little touches that come to be by the end of the film are also expertly crafted.

On the technical side of the fence, the cinematography by Nicholas Jackson really shines, with a good eye for when to bring about more contrast versus high key lighting set-ups. What we get from either being extremely well balanced. The audio mixing is done justice here as well, with a small touch of a score that adds a big impact for the ending of the film.

This is a gut-wrenching short that is sure to illicit emotions no matter what you may have been through in life. It is so heart-breaking seeing a man who obviously at one time had a great life, great career, and happy family reduced to such a level after something horrible like this happens.

While this may be a topic that is touched on in films before, the sheer nature of how Danny chooses to work through his demons is where we see the most impact.

Without getting into too many spoilers I will just say to deny the truth from oneself can be the most dangerous thing of all.

Serial

This being my second film from Julien and team, I see now more than ever how much love they put into their work. While the first short I sat down to had a more comedic style to it, this brings a whole new definition of their range to the forefront. There is obviously a lot of talent here and I am excited to continue to look through their work more as time goes on.
