The Confessions of the Bat Review
The Confessions of the Bat is a 2020 short film produced and directed by Ronnie Henry.
Taking on the task of making any film based on the property of DC Comics’ Batman is no easy feat, however The Confessions of the Bat provides an interesting angle to the dynamic of Bruce Wayne and his reasons for wanting to continue on in his fight for justice.
Keeping this film contained to a single location was both an economical and clever move by director Ronnie Henry, in that it allows us to focus in on just the simplistic question of why. A question that of course has been asked before in the comics as well as the various film incarnations of this property but in this story, we are given a hopeful reason to keep going.
This is a short film that was made by an obvious team of dedicated fans that have a lot of technical prowess. The sound design is great, with a clean audio mix from Ernesto Suarez. The score by Jamie Wesley and Curtis James carries at just the right moments. The costume design by Shaun Campbell deserves recognition as well, the bat suit while never worn looks great here. Of course, the cinematography by Jeff Celis is beautifully done, adding the right look to everything overall.
Coming from the perspective of someone who is not an ardent comic book reader there was still a lot to enjoy. The interplay between Bruce and Alfred was well written with nice chemistry between Kieran Wesley and Tim Shoesmith.
Again, this was an enjoyable and competently made fan film from folks who have deep respect for the lore. Henry and team provide a nice short film even despite working on the shoulders of such huge well-known characters. There are great things on the horizon for this creative group and it will be exciting to see more from them.
