The Audition Review

The Audition is a 2020 one man show feature film written, directed, and produced by Sol Roth.

Whether intentionally or unintentionally The Audition somehow transcends the space of meta commentary to become an almost museum level piece of absurdity in an ode to the actor’s audition tape.

Coming from a background of filmmaking one of the most taxing parts of making a film is the audition process. Submissions ranging from bad to great to everywhere in between takes up so much time. So, walking into this film already had me in a place of dread. However, despite the flaws there were some solid moments of acting on display from Sol Roth.

Before going any further though to me this is by no means any kind of definition of perfection. The one item that hampers the viewing process of this piece is the really bad audio quality that persists throughout. Perhaps what was utilized was just an on-camera mic, but either way it is tough to listen to because of this alone.

This is almost a film that belongs on a loop as an installation piece at a museum in my mind. Something you walk into a dark room as it is projecting on the wall and just look at for a few passing minutes. Sol Roth obviously took a lot of time in making this happen and embodying so many different styles of characters that it can be interesting to just play in the background.

Due to the audio quality issues I find this one hard to recommend for an actual full viewing, but I like it as a passing curiosity. It has this almost Andy Warhol like effect where it is just this one thing we are forced to watch for an extended period of time.

Sol Roth has a place in front of the camera, that much is undeniable, but when it comes to filmmaking there is a lot of room for growth here. That is by no means a bad thing but just a few tweaks would make the viewing experience much more enjoyable. Taken in as a lens of absurdity though and you have yourself something much more enjoyable.
