Hurricanes Review
Hurricanes is a 2020 short film written and directed by Joe Quartararo.
A dash of Slacker and a pinch of Nashville, Hurricanes is a perfect blend of differing stories all connected by cocktails.
What is great about this short is that every single vignette could have easily been expanded to a short film in their own right. All of the characters have interesting stories that are easily built up and manage to move forward at the peak of interest. Some told through a lens of optimism, others with an air of despair, but they all manage to keep interest.
On top of all of that we are treated to some great visuals with a beautiful pro mist filter effect on the skin tones. Much credit goes to cinematographer Will Hart in this department, with some great lighting throughout.
Looking further at the technical aspects the sound by Jose Ramirez with mixing by Eric Romary is top notch. Nothing came out too tinny, or overmodulated. Lastly the music by Daniel Kerrigan and Cav Eire provided perfect touches in the entire piece, with a personal standout being the ending at the bar.
Quartararo obviously has some great writing and directing talent that is clearly on display here. With each shot being well thought out and expertly executed. The only time where some slight over-movement if you will, cropped up was early on when our late artist subject was pouring a drink for himself, but this is a very minor note.
At the end I felt as if I was treated to something smartly crafted and well cared for. Quartararo has amassed a team with some great talent and they took obvious strides to make a daring but fun film. This is one to check out and you might find yourself pausing halfway through to pour yourself a nice drink to enjoy alongside.
