While We Wait Review

While We Wait is a 2021 short film written, directed, and produced by Andy Taylor.

A classic reluctant love story told with a cheeky sense of humor, While We Wait delivers in both funny moments and heartfelt earnestness.

John is a man who gives us no reason as the audience to empathize with him at all. He has a gruff, prickly exterior and after a night of heavy drinking wakes up to a strange woman (Grace) in his bed. In what is an all-too-common sad truth in the realm of a one-night stand, John wants Grace to leave as soon as possible. However still living with his mother she offers Grace tea, prolonging the stay far past John’s liking.

The story that unfolds is one where love can blossom from even the lowest of places. It shows how life has this funny way of sometimes giving us good when we least expect it.

The only moment that took a bit of a hard turn in the story has to be when John goes chasing after Grace after he lets all his frustration out in one explosive scene. The swing from his yelling to just as quickly trying to get her at the behest of his mother was perhaps true to real life, but just felt like a bit of a hard turn for the plot.

Outside of this, though, everything else presented in the film is great. The acting turns from Emma Hind and Mark Porter were great. The production design by El Callaghan and Lewis Stalker shows clear inspiration and really sets the tone of the world strongly from the opening moments. The cinematography by Mike Donaghy delivers throughout. Lastly, the score is another good one by Flora Cheng with sound design bringing it all together by Luke Hodgkinson.

Serial

Andy Taylor and his team are doing a lot of splendid work with this short. Even though the concept is simple, there is a lot of effective character development being conveyed in a short amount of time. This overall though is a charming film that tells a nicely layered story filled with plenty of quirky yet relatable characters.
