UV: A Resistance Story Review

UV: A Resistance Story is a 2020 short film directed by Lorenzo Scalzo.

A short vampiric clad thriller that delivers on some solid tension in a unique world, UV: A Resistance Story is an interesting concept that is ripe for further world building.

For any vampire story lovers out there, this short film will instantly conjure up thoughts of Daybreakers (2009), because it tells of a world that is controlled by a vampire force. It is unique though to see the film build to this point in a way that is unexpected.

Something this film excels at is building some solid tension. So much so that it really felt as if it could have lingered longer in it. While taking place inside a mysterious complex, it is claustrophobic and brooding, with some strong atmosphere throughout.

While the film does not fall short in its expansion to flesh out the larger world in the story it doesn’t ring as strong as the opening section. Of course, the ending provides a semisatirical look at a world run by vampires, which is a nice subversion but underpins a bit of the moments shown from the onset.

From a technical eye, the production value on-screen is solid. Again, the strong opening act featuring a beautifully balanced red hue over it all from cinematographer Nicolo Carturan works to great effect. The sound design from Tecla Zorzi really envelopes the viewer in a strong sense of atmosphere complemented by the score from Tecla Zorzi.

Serial

This is overall a stylized and unique short film that fans of vampires especially will enjoy. It comes from a solid and capable team that is utilizing a few genres effectively here. While not all of it lands as strongly as our opening set up, it still does all come together by the end.
