Lost Luggage Review

Lost Luggage is a 2016 short film written by David Eimer and directed by Thomas Burke.

A true character study that floats along in a world not defined by conventional boundaries; Lost Luggage is a perfect encapsulation of the mindset of someone completely disillusioned by the world in which they inhabit.

Without a strong character to carry us through, this could just as easily become one of those films you might feel tempted to reserve a casual eye roll toward for its musings on the world. However, David Eimer in the lead role as Neil Bishop really walks a fine line between defeated nihilism and protruding optimism that the world might just get a little better.

This is a short film that wears a gritty aesthetic proudly on its sleeve, allowing for a pretty much exclusively handheld aesthetic throughout. The cinematography by Zach Bachand knows when to allow moody as well as a more high key style lighting in at the right moments.

The heart of the film again falls back to our lead Neil Bishop, who performs his duties as a lost luggage courier with a sense of normalcy, in stark contrast to the bitter man the film introduces us to from the start. It is an interesting profession to study here and one that also makes for a great metaphor as to Bishop’s own lost state in the world, just trying to find a place of peace or a home.

The aesthetics of the film are all great, and the voiceover narration by Eimer carries the film in its gravelly pitch. It is distant yet approachable all at once.

Serial

Burke along with a great team have constructed a fine film here, one with a distinct and interesting voice. It feels perfect in its length and has a great pace throughout thanks in part to Burke’s own editing on display. This is one sit down to and check out.
