Random Knowledge Review
Random Knowledge is a 2018 short film written and directed by Michael Charron.
A fun and witty ode to the titans of bar trivia, Random Knowledge is a loving encapsulation of the sometimes overly competitive world of trivia night.
The story of a group of friends in their amazingly named troop called “Fallopian Boobs,” meeting for an especially intense night of bar trivia. The film deftly maneuvers between the internal intensity of the evening and the actual lived-in reality creating a smart visual representation of that feeling of focus one has with any test of knowledge.
There is something for everyone here in the questions asked in the evening, with each character showcasing their particular skills in different knowledge categories. From spots, to Animorphs, to King Henry VII, it is hard not to find yourself calling out to the screen when you yourself know the answer.
In what one could call a visual case of expectations vs. reality, the film showcases each vignette with a great visual fidelity. Cinematographer Steven Gunter brings a grand style to both, with of course the standout being all the moments of intense expectations. Especially in the dance off toward the end of the film, the colored soaked lighting against the amazing Braniac song from TW Bond, creates sheer hilarious joy.
A lot of care and detail went into this short film. From the great use of extras, the legitimate shirt and logo designs, to the style of the bar setting itself, everything has a meticulous definition to it. Charron really takes a great level of care to make the world feel lived in and highly detail, which is shown off in every frame.
If you are looking for a fun little film to watch in the evening or looking to reminiscence about trivia nights of the before times, then Random Knowledge has you covered. This is a well-paced comedic short that will have you engaged from start to finish.
