Blue Glass Review

Blue Glass is a 2020 short film directed by Janusz Madej and written by Henrietta Bryant and Janusz Madej.

The most easily notable element in this short is the powerful use of visual variety and symbolism that occurs throughout. Madej has a keen eye for providing some unique angles and perspectives, especially in some amazing macro filming elements.

As a further echo of this sentiment, the cinematography from Allessandro Felici and Joas Burggraaf only add to the amazing visual style that this film is dripping with.

There is a lot of David Lynch influence here, as well as an easy call out to Black Mirror as well with the strong science fiction slant. It is an interesting combination that pays off in many regards.

The only place that feels a tad bit alienating no pun intended is in the storyline itself. While engaging and presented well, it feels a little by the numbers, leading to a twist ending that feels a little forced. It doesn’t really strike the audience so much as it does leaves an air of confusion.

The cast here is strong with solid performances across the board. The standout being Dr. Oscar Koskis as portrayed by Hank Botwinik.

Where it seems more attention was needed in the film was the dynamic between Alice and Alison. The idea of a robotic and authentic version of the same woman was an inspired choice, but there just didn’t seem to be enough built-up tension between the two in the story.

Serial

Again, though this is a great visually captivating short film, that has an interesting story that just needed a bit more added to it. That is not to discount anything on display here and still makes for a thought-provoking piece worthy of your time.
