Modern Day Cathedral Review
Modern Day Cathedral is a 2020 music video directed by Philos Mauric Klein.
A perfect compliment to a layered song, Modern Day Cathedral delivers a visual splendor that is almost hypnotic throughout.
As a song that encapsulates modern day consumerism, likening it to that of an ornate cathedral meant to entice us to our material doom, Modern Day Cathedral is a beautiful ballad with amazing vocals from Rufus Coates and Jess Smith.
Klein as director uses effective imagery to heighten this tone. The piece gives us slices of utter dread, whimsical folly, and heartfelt visual storytelling. It is a challenge to the viewer to rethink the normal sensibilities we have been so programmed to just see as the norm.
The challenge of creating any music video is to find a balance and to compliment the vocals, something that is all too often missing, but not with this wonderful short film.
The cinematography by Ferdinand Will is gorgeous, using mostly effecting natural lighting. There is balance throughout and it delivers the highest fidelity it can. Without knowing the exact technical specifications, one can assume there was a use of anamorphic lenses which always adds a wondrous touch to an instant filmic shine.
The pacing in the edits from Maurice Lavnour is great, never lingering too long, and knowing exactly when to implement cuts throughout the whole of the short.
This is again a deep music video with symbolism in droves, adding to an eclectic charm. It is a music video that careers a lot of love in it, and it stands tall as a result.
