The Killer of Grassy Ridge Review

The Killer of Grassy Ridge is a 2020 short film written and directed by Johnny K.

A short horror film that is built around a twist of an ending, wherein this usually makes for a shaky foundation, The Killer of Grassy Ridge triumphs in a clear moment of teaching a valuable lesson in judgment.

To speak anymore at length about the final act of this short film would be to ruin something that is an amazing moment. This is truly one that you just have to sit down to and experience yourself.

It is always so amazing to really truly think you have a story figured out for it to pull the rug out from under you, and here it is not just the rug that goes but the entire floor.

With all of that out of the way, we have a simple yet highly effective and engaging story. The acting is minimal yet works throughout, and the only piece that felt a little tacked on was the last minute. While a personal take, it felt as if it wasn’t completely necessary.

Along those same lines, the music by Mattia Cupelli and Doug Maxwell certainly fit the tone of the piece but towed the line of overdramatic at moments too. It wasn’t offensive but just seemed a little generic in places.

The one other aspect that would have enhanced the viewing experience as well would have been some slightly higher quality visuals. Again, nothing offensive at all, but after finishing the piece there was this bit of yearning to see things even more high quality since the story presented was just that good.

Serial

Overall, this is a short film that horror fanatics will have an amazingly twisted time with. It is smart, atmospheric, and lulls you into a safe place only to slap you right across the face by the very end. Give this one a watch for sure, you won’t be disappointed.
