Lost At… Review

Lost At… is a 2021 short film directed by Andy DeAngelo and written by Eric Robert E.

A sense of yearning and grief highlight a film that creates a clear voice but a few minor factors hold Lost At… back from a stronger piece overall.

From a technical aspect, the majority of visuals in the short are gorgeous. It actually came as a surprise to see that it was filmed completely on the Canon 5D Mark IV as it seemed to be more evocative of say a Blackmagic or potentially Arri camera in some moments. The only moments that weren’t as strong being more of the evening scenes at the apartment.

The acting from Momo Judy Ave was also a highlight here as well. With it essentially being a one woman show, it could easily have suffered for it, but she holds a firm presence on-screen throughout the entire runtime.

Where things felt a little disjointed was in the final act of the film. It was a well-constructed circle back to the beginning moment, but the bridge getting there was a little shaky.

For those who have not seen the short yet it is highly encouraged to do so before reading on as it is hard not to talk about these story beats without spoiling the film a bit so just a fair warning here.

With that out of the way, the passage of time between getting the news of the search for her sister and the acceptance of moving forward did not really feel like enough time had passed. Perhaps a scene showing a struggle to move on by passing the same room with all her old things, or just our protagonist struggling to get out of bed for days on end, or even not going into work. Something to just allow the audience to really feel the struggle of our main protagonist.

With this the weight of the note being seen would have an even greater impact, along with a slower ease into the sister’s more laissez-faire style of living life in the note would really make everything resonate more.

Serial

This is still a film that has a lot of great merit to it, there is no doubting that. Just a few minor tweaks would give this just a tad more kick to the finale, but DeAngelo and team have still created a strong showcase for a lot of film talent.
