Filmmaker of the Week Lorraine Wheat & Kelly Chen
Episode 4 of Filmmaker of the Week with Lorraine Wheat & Kelly Chen:
Lorraine is a writer and director with a background in journalism that obtained her MFA in Film and Television Production from the University of Southern California. She began her film career outside of school in post-production as an assistant editor for Leander Sales on an episodic horror for UrbanFlix TV, which opened the door to working on the set of Taraji P. Henson’s “Peace of Mind.” Now she works at ViacomCBS promoting Paramout Plus’ scripted and non-scripted shows.
Kelly Chen is a junior studying Classical Performance and Composition with an emphasis in Keyboard Studies at the Thornton School of Music. She applies her musical background to sound design and audio for film and games. She feels strongly that “Unspoken Vows” is a film that will bridge the gap between the Asian and Black communities. As a first- generation Asian American, she realized through teachings of the older generation that anti-blackness has been deeply rooted in Asian culture.
While drinking lots of coffee, Kelly Chen and Lorraine Wheat formed Cinema Latte Productions to tell human-driven dramas and romances targeted at Gen Z and Millennials. The café latte first originated in Italy when coffee lovers would add espresso to warmed, frothy milk. Like all great ideas, the latte traveled the globe and diverse perspectives evolved the latte into the delectable Indian tea known as the masala chai before inspiring Seattle, Washington’s latte artisan movement. Like the latte, Chen and Lorraine are striving to tell stories that spawn movements empowering People of Color to unite.
