Hand Review
Hand is a 2021 short documentary directed by Brett Harvey.
A revealing and touching look at what it means to live with a rare disease, Hand delivers an amazing short narrative documentary that leave you with a few tears on your cheek.
What is utterly brilliant about this short documentary is how it begins with such an open slate. With such a simple title there are so many things it could be about, and when the revelation comes that this is about a man (Harvey himself) dealing with Parkinson’s disease it will catch you off guard.
Now hopefully you will have already seen the short before reading that, but it would be hard to talk about a film that solely focuses a narrative around this without mentioning it at some point here.
Getting back on track there is such a personal quality to this piece. Framing the narration conversationally and taking time to inject some humor throughout lets the audience in so wonderfully. At no point will you feel alienated while watching this film. Harvey himself delivers everything with genuine charm throughout.
The framing of the hand in relation to different moments in life or the small stories that are told have a great sense of framing. These are unique takes on moments of reflection with an amazing sense of visual fidelity.
It is very clear that Harvey has a genuine love and appreciation not just for film but also for filmmaking. The artistry here is clear from the very beginning, and not a single frame feels wasted at all.
Overall, this is a very easy short documentary film to recommend. Hand is an engaging and thought provoking short that sends a wonderful message of perseverance and finding solace in all the trials that life may deliver.
