Dirty Dirty Review
Dirty Dirty is a 2020 short film directed by Vesyee. This film was screened for review as part of the Free Independent Film Weekend Fright Night 2021.
A densely packed short film that carries the weight of various themes effectively, Dirty Dirty brings a lot of heart and charm under a horror style veneer.
The easiest place to put praise on this short foremost is the visuals. The cinematography by Donminic is spectacular throughout. Each scene is lit well and conveys a sense of darkness without being hard to see, all the levels are just perfect.
The story told here could easily be expanded upon to even make it to feature length, but even as told it walks the line of being just big enough to make it all work. One could see viewers of the film who might not be engaged or paying attention to all the elements getting confused though, but this is not a slight to the piece by any means.
Where it was a little divisive was in some of the editing, especially early in the piece. At moments it seemed too choppy and quickly cut after holding on takes a bit longer in previous scenes. You will get used to it after a few minutes, but it takes some adjustment.
This could be described as less a horror film, but more of a film that wears the horror genre as a nice spring jacket. There is nothing here that will bring a scare to the screen, but it does not hold back in some depictions of gore.
The brutal car accident scene that plays out hits especially hard by the middle of the film.
This is a strong short film with some solid production value behind it. Dirty Dirty combines horror, comedy, and drama all into one neat package with a bittersweet ending. It might not satiate the appetite for every horror film, but it will certainly appeal to many of those outside of the genre as well.
