The Connection Review
The Connection is a 2019 feature film written and directed by Nicholas Naylor. The review screener of this film was sent courtesy of Midnight Releasing.
An interesting subversion in the sci-fi genre that explores an interpersonal relationship between two people linked by an otherworldly event, The Connection cannot stand up or develop past that opening premise set, however.
What ultimately hurts the film the most has to be the lack of chemistry between any of the characters throughout. Our two main leads especially just never seem to really connect or mesh together, and it leaves any emotionality they have falling flat throughout.
Add to that the inept police characters trying to catch the two for some bland comedy relief and what is put together just never holds its own.
From a story perspective, trying to keep things confined to mainly a hotel room where the two are hiding out, discovering their newfound powers makes for some good bits. The problem is that the stagnation in the story starts almost immediately.
The evolution of the powers these two have doesn’t grow much and when they do it doesn’t feel surprising or shocking in any way.
In addition, taking the female lead here and turning her into a jilted lover antagonist to transition into the third act, while a solid thought just breaks down her character arc even more.
The Connection is a film that has glimpses of good thoughts but nothing really builds up to create a strong end product. Rather everything just feels hollow and in need of stronger acting, storytelling, and over technical elements as well. What is delivered here just makes it all hard to recommend.
