A Driving Passion Review
A Driving Passion is a 2021 short documentary directed by Joshi Perera.
A well-delivered documentary that expertly peels back the all too often machismo outer layer that comes with most anything to do with cars, A Driving Passion, takes a unique look at the world of indie racing.
The first indication that you are in for a fun documentary is how it instantly subverts your expectations. Seeing a tuned-up Subaru WRX it is easy for one to surmise that the owner of such a vehicle would be a young guy who has a passing love for The Fast and Furious franchise. However, what we get in place of this is a carefully spoken Stig Richards, aged 53.
It is a delightful moment indeed and an easy highlight for the opening moments of the film.
From this point we are shown the world of those independent race car drivers and enthusiasts. Something that from an outsider perspective would seem perhaps unapproachable is show in its most inviting form.
On a technical level the film is paced very well, not rushing or holding too much at any point. It knows the story it wants to tell, and while of course with any short piece there is much more it could go on to say, this feels like a nice self-contained piece all on its own.
The camera work is impressive here and the shots particularly inside the car during the racing segments are composed very effectively, having a professional sheen to them.
As with any focused documentary there will need to be a reliance on the talent who is sharing their story and world. With Stig Richards you have someone who is a natural on camera, sharing his story as if he was talking just to you. It feels personal and genuine.
A Driving Passion is one to sit down to, especially for those into any kind of motor sports or racing. This is not a story of chasing a crazy high or fantastical dream, but rather one of passion and love. It is genuinely refreshing to just sit down to something that isn’t trying to make huge stakes or dramatic lows. It is just a guy who loves racing, enjoying his time with it and his life around it.
