Somewhere in Utah Review
Somewhere in Utah is an extended short documentary directed by Brady Skye.
There is no denying what is at the heart of this documentary and that is adventure, but Somewhere in Utah takes that concept a step further, exploring what a love for adventure truly means.
The visual grandeur of this doc is completely undeniable. Brady and Justin have an infectious chemistry together that is heartwarming and charming throughout. This is not a piece where story really takes center stage as much as the scope of the land of Utah where these two explore does.
For about the first 30 minutes or so one would be forgiven to expect a bump in the journey. An unexpected flat tire, or some kind of equipment malfunction would be the easy guess. From watching so many of these travel style shows on television where drama is fabricated, it seemed inevitable here.
This does not happen though and as you continue watching something clicks, something that says “Oh yeah, there have been a million trips where it all just goes right.”
It is honestly refreshing though, and just being able to enjoy viewing a slice of the planet that is completely breathtaking is just well fun.
Of course, there are some moments too that just feel like a little more. Something to chew on besides the fun of exploration would be nice. While the piece never loses a clear sense of beautiful imagery, there is a bit of a formula that repeats a few times too many as well.
For being just an adventure about two guys though, who also filmed everything there is a great level of production value on display here. The audio quality in particular should be noted above all else. As many filmmakers who are working with limited crews can attest, audio can become an enormous hassle quickly, but it is nailed to a T here.
There is a lot to gain from sitting down to a documentary like this, especially in a world where travel has been so limited for so many of us.
While not perfect, for those longing for escape from the mundane pandemic existence, this is the perfect recipe. Somewhere in Utah is at its core just a fun, light-hearted film that plays out like a close friend sharing a travel story. It is a breath of much needed fresh air that is sure to leave you with a smile on your face.
