Orrajt Review
Orrajt is a 2020 short film written and directed by Jeremy Vella.
A light-hearted but layered look at sociopolitical tensions between cultures, Orrajt knows how to keep things lively in delivering a poignant final package.
To start with this is yet another film from Jeremy Vella that has a high production look to it. Fabrizio Fenech delivers some gorgeous visuals with his cinematography, giving a perfect club aesthetic but not losing any details in the images overall.
The acting and characters all feel defined in the sides they take on the issues presented in the film. It is a clever way to give us lines in the sand, so to speak, while also carving out personality traits as well. Our protagonist stuck completely in the middle of the issue, just wanting everyone to get along.
The touch that makes this film standout besides all the features mentioned to this point would be the animation in the film by Violet Tonev. Yes animation, like something ripped right from Who Framed Roger Rabbit we are given hand drawn style animation over the live action sequences presented. It is something we never get a lot of in film and it is delightful to see here, and it is done well to boot.
Our animated companion helps to keep all the political issues light and we are never meant to really take sides as an audience member which is nice to see. It is ultimately at our own discretion where things may stand but it is great to see such a bipartisan take on things, something that can be all too lacking in the world of black and white we sometimes live in.
All the elements simply just work really well and there are some genuine moments of pure comedy that are sure to get a laugh from you.
Orrajt is an easy film to recommend and another solid short from Vella and his entire team. It is nice to see a director taking on so many styles and taking some risks in the stories that he wants to tell. An easy one worth checking out.
