Avocado Toast Review
Avocado Toast is a 2021 feature film written and directed by Tyler Farr.
A mid-life crisis coming of age comedy that wears all the millennial pride like a badge of honor, Avocado Toast delivers on a fun and well-paced story.
If you take a bit of Judd Apatow and blend in just a pinch of Adam McKay, you’ll have yourself somewhere in the ballpark of what Tyler Farr is bringing to the table here.
While for those not in the late 20s to early 30s camp of life may have a hard time connecting to the story, this is something that is clearly not tailored to a younger or slightly older demographic. With that said, it isn’t really trying to be. For those who can relate though, there is a lot to dig into.
There are some genuinely pure moments of comedy gold, and some bits of good story subversion, just to shake up the formula enough to bring some new ideas to the fold.
The only piece where things are a bit shaky has to be in the final act, where there is some character growth of course, but it feels a bit slow and then rushed all at the same time. However, the closing moments of the movie leaves off on a really strong crescendo that was a personal, easy laugh out loud moment.
On the technical side of things everything is done really well here. With the subtle yet well managed cinematography from Charles Unice being an easy standout. However, so many other pieces of the puzzle are all done with clear production value in mind.
It would be easy to overlook this film for the sheer amount of millennial talk that the world and internet has made into quite the meme over the years. But despite all of that Avocado Toast is still worthy of your viewing time. If you enjoy a down-to-earth comedy that is just about life and finding your place in it, you won’t be let down here. Grab a cold brew or any other fancy coffee of your choice and enjoy a delightful time with this film.
