Meow Bow Wow Review

Meow Bow Wow is a 2019 short film written and directed by Bronny Lane.

A film that certainly gains points for originality, Meow Bow Wow, has fun with the premise of a dog running away from home but a strange twist in the last act feels a bit unnecessary.

This is a short film that really hits its stride in the midpoint of the piece. The premise is certainly enough to hook you (seeing a grown man dressed as a dog will never not be funny). However, it is all the elements surrounding that premise that don’t strike as much of a chord.

The choices in music were notable throughout, and it is nice to see when a film has good musical selections that fit the tone of the moment effectively. There is also some solid comedy to be gained from the misadventures that the titular ‘meow’ goes on throughout the short.

Where things feel a little stiff is with the supporting cast around ‘meow.’ Milly, the owner feels a touch too over the top at times, somehow seeming a little more out of place than a guy in a giant dog costume. For his part Marcus Hensley turns in an amazing performance as ‘meow.’ Seriously some great moments all around from start to finish.

The third act though all seems a bit tacked on and character revelations that show up should have at least been hinted at in some way much earlier in the film. It feels like filler that could have hinted at much earlier in the piece.

Serial

On merit and premise alone, this is a short that has a lot to offer but somewhere the execution just faltered a bit. Meow Bow Wow is at its best when we are just left with ‘meow,’ doing his own thing. It makes for some genuinely funny bits and if there was a little less deviation away from that core piece or just a variation on how to add to it, there would be something just a touch stronger than the final film.
