Telepathy Review

Telepathy Review

Telepathy is a 2021 short film written and directed by Ann A. Isaac.

A short film that takes cues from an experimental nature, Telepathy crams a lot of big ideas in a short run time but some translation issues combined with a runtime that is just a tad too long hold it back from reaching higher.

There is a lot to take in during the viewing of this short film, and a lot of concepts explored. The problem is that most of these thoughts or topics are gone just as quickly as they are brought up. It leads to an overall feeling of just letting things really wash over without leaving a deeper impact.

Perhaps trimming the film down or putting more of an emphasis on one theme would have made for a more streamlined experience. Perhaps though this was not the point and if it wasn’t the intention, then the goal of presenting a lot at once is certainly achieved well here.

A piece of the film that really lands well is the mixing of shots, styles, and audio manipulation. It changes up elements just enough to hold interest outside of the stream-of-consciousness thoughts.

The other end that makes it a bit harder to digest too is the language barrier that is clearly in place. While nothing is all that bad overall, at times it’s hard to pull through different points in a touch of broken English. This would not even be worth mentioning if the film was not so reliant on the use of heavy narration.

The shots though all look really solid, and the cinematography is well maintained throughout. The visuals are one area where things never falter during the entire short.

Serial

Telepathy is high concept and has some genuinely interesting ideas at play. Things do get overstuffed and this can lead to the dreaded zoning out style of viewing but despite this there is a ton to take away. It just might require a few viewings rounds to get through to it all.
