Last Night at the Strip Club Review

Last Night at the Strip Club is a 2020 documentary directed by Nicole Bazuin.

A smart, clever and fun brief look into the love of Toronto stripper/artist Andrea Werhun, Last Night at the Strip Club, is a treat from beginning to end.

Whenever you have a singular subject for a film of any size, everything falls on the shoulders of the charisma/life of that person. It is a pleasure to say that Andrea Werhun is a natural not only in telling her story of how everything changed with the pandemic but also in her natural ability to command a presence on screen.

The pandemic brought about sweeping changes for everyone’s lives, but it could be very easy to overlook how things suddenly changed for strippers amidst all the health/lockdown restrictions. Werhun made the call even before the restrictions to walk away and her life has changed for the better since.

Watching a story that chronicles something uplifting because of COVID is always a welcome reprieve from everything else that went on last year and seems to unfortunately be trending toward again now.

The small vignettes that are utilized in the film as well are wonderfully composed with some great cinematography from Nina Djacic. It is all fun and nothing ever takes itself too seriously at any point.

Serial

Last Night at the Strip Club is an easy documentary to recommend and flows by with a breezy great pace. It is honestly heartwarming to see such change for the better despite all the adversity in the last year and a half. Can not wait to see the amazing things that Werhun does in her career, moving forward and wishing the entire creative team nothing but great things to come.

This film was screened as part of the 2021 Fantasia International Film Festival.
