Baloney Review

Baloney is a 2021 feature documentary directed by Joshua Guerci.

Baloney is a well-rounded and well-crafted documentary that celebrates gay culture in the beautiful exploration of identity and artistry that we all seek in life.

One of the greatest strengths of this feature doc from Guerci is how we are slowly and expertly drawn into the culture surrounding Baloney not just in the film but also in the stage show that is the namesake itself. The personality behind the show is wonderfully documented and the different people that make up everything about it are slowly revealed. It allows for the viewer to connect more and more as you watch, making for something heartwarming in personal charm.

This not only shows the amount of care that went into making an accurate documentary but also the heart of everything around it. The creative team clearly wanted to showcase who everyone is and what they are all hoping to accomplish. Coming from an arts background it was so easy to understand the struggle of wanting to express yourself full time. Seeing so many passionate people who want to achieve that dream made for some tender and sweet moments.

Taking the next step in logic, it can be easily said that this film not only encompasses what it can mean trying to live life as a gay male in society but also as an artist in the world as well. This is a documentary that speaks on a true level of universality that many people out there can take something away from in their own viewing experience and in fact should.

From a technical standpoint the audio mixing and cinematography were both excellent points of the feature. While there is no dramatic lighting mixed in for artistic showcasing, everything is shown with an obvious knowledge of balancing the image. Never are there any moments where things are blown out or too dark and the levels are all expertly mixed. Again this is a doc made with love.

Serial

Baloney falls into the easy to recommend category. Even going past a barrier that one could leverage from cinema tackling stories they might not agree with, there are stories here that can speak to just about anyone. Whether that comes down to finding your true self, accepting who you are, or just letting the world know that you are here to stay! It is all wonderful and worthy of your time. If you have the chance to check this one out please do.
