On Air Film Spotlight
Today’s film spotlight focuses on the short film On Air directed by Bastiaan Rook.
What is the title of your film and what inspired said title?
The Title of my short film is On Air. It was more a logical choice because the film is set during a broadcast of a radio show, On Air.
Tell us a little bit about the story and origins of your film.
I had an idea in mind in 2012 that I wanted to make another film that takes place in one location. There the idea came to make a film about a once successful DJ that now was not anymore in the spotlight, ended up working at a local radio station during the night. We wanted to tell a story about how he ended up there. That something happened, something bad, and that he can’t run from his past. So he gets a call from a stranger that doesn’t turn into a pleasant conversation.
Any films or filmmakers that inspired this film?
Drive and Talk Radio
What is the goal of the film for you?
The primary goal that I make a film I would like to watch, but most important that other film lovers would enjoy this film. As an unschooled filmmaker, this is also my film school. On air I see as my debut film. I hope at one point I have a portfolio that I can use to make a career out of it (for now, that is how you say it a pipe dream).
What has the journey been like getting the film into production?
I was late to the party. I started making crappy films with friends at age 21, while other filmmakers started with that at a younger age. I did construction study and when I decided I wanted to go to film school; I had zero credible material and knew nobody in the industry. So I choose a media education. From that point, I joined some casting agencies to be an extra in shows, films and commercials. So I could be on a set (I also act btw in commercials). And when I was finished with that study I decided to make a serious short film, named Doorsalg (I see this as my student film) It was scary but I did it. From there, I started networking and helped others with projects while working on On Air. Filmmaking for me is learning while doing.
One thing you learned from this project?
A lot. Embarising to say, but on the 1st day the AD came to me and said we are going to do the blocking now. And I did not know what she meant. I learned somethings could be prepared better, but it worked out. But what I also learned how much I love making films and that I want to make more.
How can folks find you and your film online?
You can find On Air on the youtube channel Omeleto.
