Groomsday Film Spotlight
Today’s film spotlight focuses on the short film Groomsday directed by Kyle Coffman.
What is the title of your film and what inspired said title?
Groomsday. The title came from the idea of two men getting married and experiencing a tragedy on the night of their wedding. It’s a play on the expression doomsday…. We have two grooms here and is their love doomed due to outside forces that don’t want to see them together, or will they prevail?
Tell us a little bit about the story and origins of your film.
After a one-night stand, two men fall in love and experience a horrific tragedy on the night of their wedding.
The reason I made this film is because these tragedies still happen to people in the LGBTQ community every day. I want to bring attention to this in hopes of reducing homophobia and helping people to realize that the community has not yet won the fight. Sure, gay marriage is legal in many countries, but the attacks and murders against the community haven’t stopped.

What is the goal of the film for you?
For people to believe that love wins, no matter what. Even after this awful tragedy these two men experience, their love for one another will always be unbreakable. No one can stop that. Love prevails.
What has the journey been like getting the film into production?
The journey was incredible. We casted and rehearsed virtually. In fact, the two lead actors didn’t officially meet in person until the day of shooting. But their on-screen chemistry was flawless, so we know we casted right! We ran into complications of shooting in tight spaces because of COVID-19 limitations. We wanted to ensure everyone was safe on set. We worked in post-production entirely on Zoom and that had its challenges, but the creative energy from the cast and crew brought it all together. Filmmaking is a very collaborative experience, and we like to be together, in person! But we’re just all so lucky we have the tools at our disposal to work in post virtually.
One thing you learned from this project?
I learned the importance of portraying on screen love. My objective from the very beginning of shooting was to make the audience fall in love with these two characters. At the same time, they fell in love with one another.
And on a side note, I am so thankful and humble to my cast and crew, most of which who worked on this project for free and entirely donated their time and skills to make this passion project. They believed in the story when they read the script and wanted to be a part of it.
How can folks find you and your film online?
Groomsday will be on our website, www.sebastianfilmsunlimited.com and on YouTube. It releases on Feb 14, 2022.
Any last pieces of advice for fellow filmmakers?
We shot Groomsday on a super low budget. It’s all about your story. As long as you have a great story, you can make great films with very little money. As mentioned previously, most of the crew worked for free because they believed in the story and wanted to help bring it to life. Don’t let money stop you from making your film.
