V Pyre

V Pyre Film Spotlight

Today’s film spotlight focuses on the short film V Pyre directed by Talia Chippendale.

What is the title of your film and what inspired said title?

The title of my short film is V.Pyre. It is a play on the words “Vampire/Vampyre” and the way “Corporate Empire” can be shortened to corp. Plus, it seems much more futuristic this way.

Tell us a little bit about the story and origins of your film.

We follow a vampire father in a futuristic, neon city, as he fights his way to rescue his daughter from the Hunter Corporation. I wanted to create a vampire story that seemed newer and more original than the classic victorian-esque bloodsucking romances we usually see Vampires in. I also thought, “well, what if the humans were the bad guys?” Since Vampires are immortal and humans are constantly developing, I figured it would be an interesting dynamic to play with.

Any films or filmmakers that inspired this film?

So many. As a classic anime nerd, this film was naturally inspired by films like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tekkonkinkreet, Steamboy, and that’s to name a few.

What is the goal of the film for you?

Well, this is my final student film, and the first animated project I’ve decided to pour my sweat and tears into. I’m determined to make this into something I am really proud of technically and conceptually. And maybe in the future I could develop it into a series too, we never know.

What has the journey been like getting the film into production?

I am the only person, besides my composer, who is working on this short film. So it has been very busy! Independently working on a project like this with a looming deadline really highlights the importance of learning how to schedule my time.

One thing you learned from this project?

That I absolutely adore traditional animation. The whole film will have been sketched frame by frame before being lined digitally.

How can folks find you and your film online?

You can follow the film and animation development process on Instagram at @v.pyre_shortfilm and you can find me as Talia Chippendale on LinkedIn! The trailer for the film will be uploaded to both around May.

Any last pieces of advice for fellow filmmakers?

Schedule your production based on your skills and how much time you have in the day- and include lots of breaks! Burnout is tough and awful for strenuous projects.
