Remembrance Film Spotlight

Today’s film spotlight focuses on the short film Remembrance directed by Michael Kumar.

What is the title of your film and what inspired said title?

  • Title: REMEMBRANCE [Short Film]

  • The title explains the main character of the film which follows a woman with an unusual medical condition that allows her to remember every moment of her life in vivid detail.

Tell us a little bit about the story and origins of your film.

  • SYNOPSIS: Monet has a very unusual medical condition that allows her to remember every moment of her life in vivid This phenomenon leads to questions about the path we choose to take in life.

  • The idea came from seeing real life documentaries of people who had a medical condition that gave them extraordinary memory, and using that as a backdrop to tell my story and convey a deeper message.

Any films or filmmakers that inspired this film?

  • I was not inspired by any specific films or filmmakers, however I’m sure I am subconsciously influenced by all the Directors I look up to. That being said, I would say there are similarities between this film and the mind bending films that came before it, one made with an unclear structure so the audience could interpret and figure out the plot and meaning on their own.

What is the goal of the film for you?

  • The goal of making this film was to improve in every aspect of filmmaking, and to create something compelling to use as part of a larger reel in order to hopefully help produce bigger projects in the future.

What has the journey been like getting the film into production?

  • The process was definitely challenging in terms of time and budget; we had each set for a short period of time due to the low budget, which meant having to shoot as fast as possible but because we had such an amazing and talented cast and crew, we managed to pull everything off without sacrificing a single shot, and that is all thanks to everyone’s dedication and commitment.

One thing you learned from this project?

  • I learned that you can accomplish so much with a very limited crew if they are talented and dedicated enough.

How can folks find you and your film online?

Any last pieces of advice for fellow filmmakers?

  • My favorite tactic when approaching a low budget film is to focus more on backdrop, opposed to use most of your budget on backdrops and set design, it’ll make your production value seem bigger than it actually is.
